Guardians on duty wear camouflage fatigues, a disappointing choice for wags and dreamers who were hoping for something a bit more cosmic — black bodysuits spangled with stars, perhaps. The U.S. Space Force (USSF) was established in December 2019 within the Department of the Air Force. The setup is similar to that of the Marine Corps, which is officially part of the U.S. Navy. "The USSF is a military service that organizes, trains, and equips space forces in order to protect U.S. and allied interests in space and to provide space capabilities to the joint force," the branch's mission statement reads. "USSF responsibilities include developing Guardians, acquiring military space systems, maturing the military doctrine for space power and organizing space forces to present to our Combatant Commands".
