These dogs need to be extremely intelligent and in tune with their human handler, and they also need world class stamina and an eagerness to work hard for long hours no matter the weather. It helps as well to be very light on their feet and very fast with great agility to run rings around the herds and coerce them to go where they want them to. They excel where predators aren’t an issue, as they have no protective inclinations towards their sheep, but relaxing the need to protect has allowed for them to specialise to a truly elite level at their craft.

A livestock guardian needs to bond with sheep like they are family, they need to be independent and aloof with people, and then they need to have a dulled prey drive and be attentive to the flock, not easily distracted. They also need to be large and durable, and weather resistant. They need a slow metabolism and fairly low energy levels, to go without food for decent spells and also to additionally discourage them from wandering or getting up to mischief, chasing wildlife or harassing sheep too much. They will live like sheep and view the flock as their family, watching over them protectively.

In the meantime, a harmless, mild antimicrobial/ antifungal is white vinegar, diluted, 4–6 parts water to one part vinegar. The weaker solution stings a lot less and is good for mild issues. After surgery, on the suggestion of my doctor, I’ve used the four to one part solution on myself. If it’s mites, or an infection, use the stronger solution. But as others said, please see a vet. It could be something serious that never occurred to you.
