If there was an issue they’d either wait for you to come out or in exigent circumstances break a window if there’s reason to believe the dog's lives are at risk due to overheating. This isn’t something that you would receive a summons for weeks later after the fact. Further, the criminal statute for this specific incident would fall under 597(F)PC- Every owner of any animal, who permits the animal to be without proper care and attention, shall, on conviction, be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor. It shall be the duty of any peace officer, an officer of the humane society, or officer of a pound or animal regulation department of a public agency, to take possession of the animal so abandoned or neglected and care for the animal until it is redeemed by the owner. This is why you wouldn’t be subject to a criminal summons after the fact because it’s the duty of those responding to take custody of your dogs in the event they found the dogs weren’t receiving adequate care and attention

 Like any dog, Dirk lives car rides. Especially when I have the top down and doors off of my Jeep. I park it in the garage if it rains so I don't have to put everything back together and when we took my wife's car one rainy day we came back to a surprise. We pulled into the driveway and as the garage door went up, Dirk picked his head up from the back seat of my Jeep! The garage is attached to the house and the man door was open. But how? We thought we just didn't close it well and Dirk went out to be in one of his favorite places. But then we noticed scratches on the door trim by the handle. Dirk got up on his hind legs and kept hitting the door handle like he'd seen us do so many times before. He knew that was the door we went out of so he went looking for us. These are great for dogs as they are soft. Now find a big flat field and start getting the dog interested. Try rolling it on the ground, tug, anything. Work up to throwing about 20–35 feet and see how your dog does. My dog can’t get enough of it. It helps that she is from a retriever family.

If you mean that you want the dog to just bark at the cats and scare them off then yea that’s okay but if you mean you want the dog to kill the cats then you have a mental problem. It’s already hard enough to survive on your own as a stray let alone a cat. Especially since stray cats get twice as much hate as stray dogs and get abused and poisoned more often than other stray (commonly known house pet) animals. Imagine being a cat just looking for food, water, safety, love, just anything that can keep you (and maybe your kittens) alive and have a fighting chance at life and here comes a big dog (I’m assuming 2–5 times bigger than you though some dogs are even bigger than that) and it starts attacking you and trying to kill you. That’s terrifying to think about even as a human. Cats are very misunderstood and shouldn’t be treated as badly as they are. Just like humans, they can get mental problems, they have emotions and feelings, they need food and water to survive and they didn’t ask to be born so they are just trying their best to make it through life just like a normal person. So cut the cats some slack and don’t kill them. Scare them off? Sure, but do not kill them please

 The treatment option was getting surgery which would have ran me around five thousand roughly. I wasn't against this option, I'd do anything for him but mind you this surgery didn't have a very good success rate. Being 4 pounds and having no teeth, no jaw bone already due to his age. Came to the conclusion that the best option was to have him euthanized. I was there the whole time during the process, didn't want to leave his side, constantly sobbing including the drive home knowing that he could have had another few years left maybe if I didn't do something so stupid. I came here because I needed to get this off my chest. I already know what I did was wrong and I feel so awful about the whole thing constantly crying for days. I wish I could take it all back, I loved him so much.
