With this complicated and somewhat messy process, it is possible for a presidential candidate to lose the popular vote and still win in the Electoral College. This can only happen when the margin of victory is fairly small—no more than 2.5%. This is what happened in Trump’s case. (Trump lost by 2.1% of the popular vote.) It has only happened four times since 1787.
