 If one really must give your cat tuna—I mean like Fluffy holds a gun to your head and purrs softly in your ear that you are not long for this world unless you meet her demands—choose a low sodium brand. One should also avoid ‘white’ tuna which is usually albacore, and is most usually preferred by shoppers because of its milder, less fishy taste, because albacore is usually found to have higher levels of mercury. Light tuna, usually skipjack, yellow fin, or big-eye combinations have lower mercury levels. However, tuna should only be an occasional treat and not the main course for a meal. Tuna is not a well balanced food for cats and is both high in saturated fats and low in Vitamin E.  I live alone with my 100 pound mostly shepherd mix. There are times I’m gone for 8 hours or more and he’s left indoors. When I get home he first greets me, then dashes for his water bowl and drains it. He’s figured out he can’t empty his bladder until I return, so he doesn’t drink (although he has a big thirst) until I get home. He figured it out on his own as I have no way of knowing how he could be trained for that behavior.

 Cheap AND healthy? No. The only way to make your own an ensure it’s healthy for your pets is to get a consultation with a DACVN and then you need to make sure you buy exactly what is on the diet plan for your pet(s). It can be done sure. But it won’t be cheap if you want it to be healthy. You don’t need to pay top dollar for stuff like Taste of the Wild and Blue Buffalo….those are boutique foods that “bank” on you thinking it must be the best to be that expensive. However, most of those types of companies do NOT have veterinary nutritionists on staff to formulate their foods, they do not do feeding trials, they do not make their own food-they send the formula and bags off to a 3rd party to make their food and they don’t test whether the formula is actually providing nutrition that is bioavailable to the dogs and cats being fed. Many of these companies have also been the ones being fed to the dogs that develop nutritionally mediated dilated cardiomyopathy (heart disease caused by the food). You can get a really affordable food such as Purina for both dogs and cats. Iams is pretty affordable too. Both have done extensive testing and feeding trials. I’d trust this over trying to make my own “cheap healthy” food.

A cat’s kiss on my hand is special

 As a person who has had many pets since childhood that I have loved, and been loved back by them, I can definitely tell you that there is no other love that is as pure and unconditional as a dog’s or cat’s. I did have a couple of gold fish also that my father bought me when I was about 9 years old. I love animals of all types even though some are a bit big for the house, you know, elephants, tigers, lions, wolves. A cat’s kiss on my hand is special, and a dog’s kiss on my hand is special also. And when I have been gone, they jump up and down they are so excited I am back. I cannot imagine a world without them and their love. They respond to love and quickly return it. So be kind and loving to them, you will not be disappointed.

Then there’s the rest who could (conceivably) cause an upset just as Greece and Denmark once did. It’s unlikely but it can happen.
