This question is so broad that it’s hard to give a meaningful answer. The person I want to be is very good at vim and tmux, living entirely in the terminal like something out of The Matrix. Unfortunately I am not that person; too hard to motivate more than an occasional trip through vimtutor. I can say “tmux” though.

In college and at my first job I used notepad++ on Windows to write PHP code. It has syntax highlighting. It does not have autocomplete. It’s good at editing text, using common Windows keyboard shortcuts. It has those nice tabs where you can open multiple files. It lacks any other expressive power. It is okay.

One project at my first job used Visual Studio (the heavyweight IDE, not VS Code, which didn’t exist then). It was eye-opening. Intellisense shortens the distance between thought and written code in a way that’s meaningful and makes it easier to maintain flow. The graphical “ooh draw your UI with our tools” thing was… pretty dumb. But it was possible to reason about what was going on.

It depends on the cat. I’ve always been incredibly lucky with strays. They have always gotten along with my cats right away and adjusted quickly to life indoors. Kagetora was a stray for several months before we adopted him. He was injured when we took him in, but has always been gentle, and bonded with our dog and our two resident cats. We got Kikyo as a kitten, but she’s always been very open to strange people and animals. She’s a kind and loving soul. They both immediately got along with our youngest cat’s mom when we fostered her. She had six kittens, and our cats were ready to help, and they gave a lot of baths and supervised a lot of kitten play sessions. Some cats aren’t as welcoming, especially if they are an only pet. It can take them a long time to adjust to a new cat. And many strays have some difficulty adjusting to life indoors, but like anything, they just need a little time to adjust. Many cats are neophobic. They don’t like change. They thrive on routine and strong family bonds. If anything threatens that, they can get very upset. So you have to introduce any change very gradually.
