Start out by putting the new cat in its own area, separate from the resident cat. Door closed. Take a blanket or toy from the new cat’s area with its scent on it, and put it in the resident cat’s area in a place where it will notice it, but not a place that the resident cat values highly (napping spots, eating spots, near the litter, etc,). Do not force the cat to interact with the object, but make note of the resident cat’s reactions. Do the same for the new cat by placing an object from the resident cat in the new cat’s area. If you see signs of distress, cool it for a few days. If things seem okay, keep placing fresh objects with the other cat’s scent.
