But parents have named their children after Tolkien characters, after ancient culture’s gods and goddesses (I roomed with a girl named Aphrodite one year during a high school orchestra festival), and all other sorts of literary or mythological sources, over the years. Having an unusual and immediately-identifiable name can make it tough on a kid. But certainly survivable, and in most cases probably not abusive - though I’m not so sure about Shrek. It’s useful if the name is easily pronounceable as spelled, though. Give some thought to what is going to happen on your child’s first day of school, if you would. Just because you know how to pronounce ‘Blodeuwedd’, doesn’t mean her kindergarten teacher will. Think about what’s associated with the name. Naming your girl-child Medusa - or your boy-child Voldemort - is probably not a great idea. If you really like the name, but it’s unusual enough to cause problems with either pronunciation or recognition (“seriously, they named you after the cat in that stupid Halloween movie??”), use it as their middle name.
