Cats can and will scratch most fabrics. The way to keep a cat from scratching furniture is to cover your furniture with blankets and get some scratching posts. Cats won’t scratch blankets because they are loose and not drawn tight, so they aren’t any good at helping them shed the outer layers of the claw. Once the cat is reliably scratching the scratchers for a few weeks, you can try removing the blankets. Keep them handy in case kitty backslides. It sometimes takes a few rounds.
