It depends on why they gave you a specific food. Does the cat have a medical condition that requires this type of food? If so, talk to a vet, if you have one or use the internet to look up a similar based food that costs less. Also, if the cat has a medical condition don't be afraid to talk to the shelter people. They want this relationship to work. If the cat doesn't have a medical condition there are a lot of good cat food products on the market that are reasonably priced. Consider the age of your cat. If older, look at a senior product. The key to changing an animal's food is to gradually feed in the new food by mixing it in with the old. That way your cat can regulate it's tummy to the new food. Stay away from foods high in ash. Cats generally do well on dry food. Be sure your cat has plenty of water, toys and love. You'll do great!
