Put the newest arrival in a separate room and put something with the other pet’s scent on it in the room. Give the first resident pet something with the new pet’s scent on it. After a few days, put the first pet in the new pet’s room and let the new pet explore the house for an hour or so Then switch back. Feed them at the same time on either side of the new pet’s room, with the door closed. After a while you can let them meet face to face, but keep a hold on the cat. Be prepared to separate and return the new pet to their room at the FIRST HINT of potential trouble. If the dog is a large dog, you may have to put him in a place other than where the cat is when swapping. If the dog is the new pet, you may still have to put the cat in a room unless you have a large room or a small dog. Still give the dog a toy or blanket with the cat’s scent on it. Reward them when they interact nicely. Give both pets LOTS of love, playtime, and affection. Divert them from undesirable behavior by giving them a toy to play with and reward them for desirable behavior.
