Your cat may be afraid of whatever you're holding. I found our Eloise at age four months in a parking lot, caught her in a trap and took her straight to my vet for an exam and spaying. She was so frightened, he was unable to keep hold of her without bloodshed (on his part). Finally, he got a big bath towel, cornered her and scooped her up with it. To this day, more than two years later, Eloise runs away when she sees anyone holding a towel or anything similar. When I get up and put on my clothes, she scampers away and watches from a distance until they are on me, at which point the clothes are “safe" again. If I come out of the bathroom wrapped in a towel, she's fine until I take the towel off. Now it's in my hands, so she has to run to safety. Maybe your cat has been similarly traumatized by a person holding something. All we can do is continue to treat them with kindness and hope they eventually become less fearful.
