Not every dog is going to be a good match for life with cats, but many are— I grew up in a cat-loving household, but we took in a rescue dog at one point and she was always loving and protective towards our cats (if a little overly-playful for the old lady of the house, when she was a pup). When my dad was a boy, he had a dog and cat who were best friends. A dog with the right temperament introduced properly, or one who grew up around cats, can be a big sweetheart where cats are concerned! And of course, some dogs are just lovers and not fighters in general and will befriend anything.

I’m afraid I don’t have a picture of his ‘dog mom’, but this is my little buddy shortly after coming home from the rescue farm to live with me. Before I could pick him up and take him, he and his siblings were in the care of an ENORMOUS shepherd dog, and she was the gentlest mama you could ever hope for— she’d been the foster mom to the kittens’ mama as well, so it was more like ‘grandma’ stepping in after the babies were born to help raise them. While many animals came and went, coming into the rescue and then getting forever homes elsewhere, this dog was a permanent staff member, and her favorite job was looking after kitties, making sure they were safe and adjusting well to the place.

It’s not a perfect analogy, but your dog should be someone you love and you should want to hold onto her/him as long as you can (as long as they don’t have a terminal disease and aren’t in extreme pain). Figure out why he barks & fix the problem. Does he need exercise? Is someone provoking him? Is he too hot? Does he have water at all times? Is he tied by the neck constantly? Is he getting enough (good quality food) to eat? Is he alone for long periods of time? Does he have a (safe & NOT rawhide!!) Chew toys? Is he in pain? Are his stools normal? Any problems urinating? Does he have mites, fleas, ticks tormenting him? Have you taken him to your vet clinic to see if they can spot the issue if you can’t figure it out? Dogs bark to tell you something is not right with their world or themselves. It’s the only language they can speak. They understand lots of our languages, it’s up to us to try to understand theirs & remedy the problem, since we hold them in our care.
