Many dog owners who walk their dogs are “mildly bothered” when a person approaching them avoids close contact by stepping into the street to avoid the dog. They see this as an insult to their ability to control their dog. Whether this is true or not can’t be determined from your situation and based on your past interaction with dogs you may have been just taking the safe way to maneuver around the dogs. A contributing factor to this scenario is the fact that the dog was off leash, since you have no idea of the training of the dog and the abilities of the handler to control your dog your actions seemed reasonable.

I get that people look at their animals as family. I don’t. To me, it’s still an animal and human life far far exceeds that of a pet. That doesn’t mean I don’t love or value my pet or treat it respectfully. My golden retriever is da bomb!! It just means my family member’s success in life is valued way above and beyond that of an animal and I would do anything I needed too in order to obey and make their life easier. It sounds like your dog will make your son’s life tougher for now. Remember, this isn’t forever unless your son is on lifetime parole. Doubtful. If you show good faith and respect for the system, I guarantee you’ll get that in return.

Here’s the other perspective you likely aren’t considering…you put your dog in danger by not removing it because it could be killed if it responds in any perceived threatening manner towards the PO or police who come to your home to arrest your son who violated his parole. Now I’m not saying your son will do that, you know him, not me. Here’s the bottom line…if you want your son to have the best chance of success on parole and not go back to prison you’ll have to get used to some rules which feel like your freedoms are being trampled on. They are for everyone’s safety believe it or not.

Yeah, this is an interesting question to me. I think there is ‘an intellectual war’ going on in the family unit that is not acknowledged. Here is the thing. You stand at the cross-roads of an inter-generational change in the way kids are raised, and the context in which they are raised. Here are the important points of difference.

What is apparent is that ‘if aspiration is what they wanted’, they don’t like the results. They don’t like me being better than them. I feel particularly with my mother, because she is the critical one, that she is competing with me. My father is less likely to compete. They just have very ‘narrow ideas on what success looks like’. So, the idea of me ‘making money on stocks’ is gambling, or ‘winnings’ as my mother calls it. My business ideas, which would be fine if they were her ‘business ideas’, are open to derision because they are mine, even when I query here. When I critique her ideas, like me questioning her logic, and her telling me she studied ‘logic’, and me asking her to name ‘one logical fallacy’, and she can’t. She is caught out, and she is at that point ‘conciliatory’. Nothing will change though. She’ll be on my side if her BF does the same thing to be. So, I’m in this ‘competition’ with her. In my view, I’m just being objective. I don’t mind criticism. I just want objective standards. In her estimate, she is ‘under attack’. And even if I got her to concede that, she will not ‘retain that awareness’. There is a memory fade of the conversation, and she falls back into type, whereas my father has kind of repressed the expectation that ‘I’d be different’ and just adopts this ‘safe mode’ of saying all the time, ‘Its great that you’re passionate about what you do’.

Also your doctor, you need to let him/her know of your depression and then you will be given the help you need. But please don’t get confused about this. Your 16 year old does not have to support you, or watch your son. She has her own concerns, she probably has exams coming up that could affect her future, she has many concerns at her age that she really needs support in. If you cannot give her this, at least give her the space that she needs, or you will drive her away. She is only 16, and is at a time in her life where she needs support, not the other way around. It must be extremely hard for your daughter to deal with having a crying baby in the house at a time when her education is so important, and also to come to terms with losing the one support that she probably thought she could count on, yours, as her mother.

I recognize that you now have a lot to deal with, with a new baby. But you, and presumably the father, decided to bring a new life into this situation and it is the two of you who need to figure out your new schedule, and how you will make it work. Please realize that it was not your daughter’s decision, she had nothing to do with that, and yet she also is having to deal with this fallout at a time of her life that is so important to her future, and it is impacting her at a level of which you have no idea. I am not saying this to add to your anxiety but so that you can look for help in the right places, and not in the ones that are not appropriate. If she does find she can help at all, be grateful for what she can offer and try not to encroach on time she needs for study. I remember visiting a family once, and as the mom and I were chatting, her teenage daughter brought the baby in and handed her to her mother. The mother immediately thanked her elder daughter for bringing the baby, and asked: ‘did she wake and bother you as you were studying? I’m sorry that happened, thank you for getting her up and bringing her to me.’ There was no expectation that it was the daughter’s job or duty….
