An sudden increase in fluid intake, accompanied by heavy urine output and more diaper changes than normal over the course of 3-4 days could be the first symptoms of Type I diabetes. If those changes are present, the child must be seen by a doctor ASAP [As Soon As Possible], or even taken to the E.R.
My wife and I cared for our now five year old grandson
for nine hours a day, Monday through Friday from six weeks of age until the
February before his Fifth birthday in July while our daughter and son-in-law
worked. When learning to talk, he called both his parents and us Mom and Dad.
He eventually learned how to pronounce Ouma [oh-ma, lit. Old Mother] and Oupa
[Oh-pa, lit. Old Father]. (My South African wife speaks fluent Afrikaans.)
We, and his
parents, began encouraging potty training at about 2½-2¾. About six weeks
before his third birthday, he lost his appetite, began drinking lots of water
both at our house and at his home, and started blowing out diapers with a
suddenly increased urine volume and frequency. Our daughter and son-in-law were
just as concerned as we were. About seven days into this, my wife texted our
daughter at work daughter not allowed incoming phone calls]. Our daughter
contacted the pediatrician's office and my wife took our grandson in for a
blood test. He was diagnosed with Type I Diabetes and admitted to the
Children's Hospital about 40 miles away. Most children his age end up
unconscious in the ER in severe Diabetic Ketoacidosis, or DKA. We caught it
before that happened so the usual five to seven day hospital stay was just two
and a half. What's ironic is this daughter is the only one of our four children
who struggled with simple math. She now finds herself counting carbohydrates
and using various insulin to carb ratios to calculate how much insulin to give
him. He turns five the third week in July and is FINALLY figuring out the
toileting thing. Every time his blood glucose goes high, [sometimes several
times a day] his urine output doubles. And that's with the grownups in his life
closely monitoring his blood glucose and encouraging [we've changed to
demanding] that he toilet.
