Nineteenth-century Minnesota winters killed a lot of people. Rotting corpses and human bones literally showed up in melting snowbanks in the springtime. Sometimes, missing people were found when dogs brought in a human bone between their teeth, and search parties traced the dogs back to where the rest of the body was — or most of it. (People who had frozen to death were sometimes torn apart by foxes and wolves and other animals. Horrifying shit. And our generation thinks we have it hard because we have to shovel snow off our heated cars?) Minnesota can be damned pretty. Alaska can be damned pretty. But you can’t really eat beauty. You eat food, and Minnesota grows a lot of food. Proximity to a farm doesn’t matter so much to people in the 21st century, but it mattered a hell of a lot to people when they were founding cities here, not very long ago. There are natural biological advantages and conveniences to living in colder places. Cold and darkness can be bad for your head sometimes, but there aren’t so many viruses and diseases from the natural world. If you look at where things like yellow fever tended to flourish, it was in hot, swampy humid areas, places like New Orleans at the other end of the Mississippi River. A 19th-century immigrant manual promoting Minnesota referred to it as “good healthy German Minnesota,” partly because the brisker climate probably did help to ward off some kinds of disease.
