Every other President and Presidential candidate in modern history (since 1976) has freely disclosed their tax returns. Even Mike Pence did it. The Congress of the United States has the legal right to subpoena tax information. Trump’s handpicked AG William Barr stonewalled and withheld this information despite the clear legal precedent. But he’s not in a position to block up the DOJ for partisan reasons anymore. The obvious answer is that there is stuff in there that is at very best questionable or embarrassing, if not actual evidence of tax fraud or other shady dealings. Based on evidence that has come to light with regards to other Trump associates, the money-laundering scandals with Deutschebank, and the ongoing tax fraud case in New York State, I think it’s reasonable to assume that it’s more likely the latter.
