However, I have heard various claims made by Americans with Indian blood lore, claiming an ancestor (usually a grandparent or great-grandparent) was sent to boarding school and then never went back to the tribe. But, this is just to rationalize how a supposed Native shows up in a family tree in an area where no Natives were located. It’s similar to “adoption” stories or “hiding out” or “fleeing” from the Trail of Tears. But, in the case of boarding schools, they have extant records (for the most part). Additionally, the number of schools is rather limited, and they had distinct timelines for operations.
